I still remember the day it happened very vividly. I showed up to my favorite news site on the internet and everything was totally different. The design was new I had pop ups asking me if I wanted to join nations I was invited to. It was like showing up to my house and everything had been rearranged and I had a new family in place of the old. Most people that first week were as bewildered as me. It seems some have eventually settled into the new format and not only learned to live with it but founds things they liked about it. I did not fit into that category.
I have stopped by a few times here and there but I don't seem to find any "big" conversations going on like there used to be. Just the same stories that are all over the internet with a couple comments at the bottom just broken into sections. Now maybe I am missing something about how great the new Newsvine is but I have still yet to find it. To me it feels like the best part of Newsvine, the conversation, is gone.
I don't understand why joining nations is better than having everyone talk in one place together. I don't understand how segregation was the right answer for one of the few places you could still show up and see opposing views on issues. I have been or am a member of a lot of web communities but this one was always my favorite. To me it always seemed the most balanced in a world where each media site just picks a side and all the users there are on the same side. To me that's boring. What am I gonna learn by talking to a bunch of people who agree with me all day? I don't want to be validated I want to be challenged.
So for all those reasons I felt like Newsvine lost it's charm. However, just because I think Newsvine lacks what I need that doesn't mean I don't need it anymore. I need an outlet to talk politics to people who are not in my social circles. I am not one to post all my political leanings on Facebook or spout them out to others over dinner. I still believe the good southern manners that talking politics and religion is just bad form. I also don't care what you are and it's not a factor in whether I am friends with you or not. So that said I need somewhere I can just vent all this political stuff that runs through a news junkies mind all day. And Newsvine used to be the perfect outlet for it.
So what did I do....well for a while I hung out on Reddit. I must admit the pictures are amusing and there is a lot to be learned there but it did it's not a site really built for political discussion either. So one night in desperation I checked out the Fox Nation. Seriously, I did. I started to read and immediately just couldn't believe the pure stupidity and hatefulness of the people who post there. I had to get an account. I started debunking myths and calling out hypocrites and other hateful rhetoric and I will admit it was kind of fun. In the back of my mind though, I understand chatting with idiots all day wasn't going to challenge me anymore than listening to people who agreed with me all day would.
I am mostly telling you all this story in the hopes that one of you will feel sorry enough for me and what I have to become to get my fix that you will give me some clue where the "real" conversation is going on. Tell me I am wrong about the NEW Newsvine and there really is still valuable conversation going on somewhere on the vine.
